All of our ‘Beginners courses’ are suitable for both beginners and improvers and are run by qualified DSWA instructors who are also professional wallers. Each course is run over two days (9:30am – 4:00pm) and costs £90 per person. Gift certificates are also available – see Gift Certificates for more information. The course covers:
Health and safety
Use of tools
Preparing the site
Building the walls
Our courses are very practical: over the two days you will take down and rebuild a section of dry-stone wall. You can work at your own pace and there is plenty of opportunity for discussion. Places on courses are limited to 10 participants per instructor and this ensures that you get plenty of individual attention.
All of the tools that you will need are provided, but you should wear stout boots and heavy duty, non-slip gloves. It’s advisable to bring water-proofs and a hat if it is likely to be cold or wet and remember to bring sun-screen and a sun-hat for courses run during the summer. Please bring a thermos flask/cold drinks and a packed lunch.
If you would like to book a place on a course, we recommend you check availability for your preferred course dates before making a payment.
Please note that if there are insufficient numbers on the course, there has to be a minimum of six per course, then the course will not go ahead and other arrangements will be made as necessary.

The beginner’s course will start with the basic principle of how to build a dry stone wall under the tutelage of accredited DSWA instructors and experienced branch members who are all members of the national association. You will contribute to the conservation of our valuable local dry stone walls and enjoy working in the countryside in a structured but informal atmosphere. The course is open to all and the more work you put in, the more you will get out of it.
At the beginning of the course you will meet your instructor and any assistants at an introductory welcome and briefing. The course teaches the basic principles of dry stone walling, which will involve taking down (‘stripping out’) a derelict or damaged section of wall and rebuilding it to DSWA standards. You can work at your own pace. The only stipulation is the wall will need to be finished.
Our course is suitable for both beginners and improvers and each course runs over two days between 9 am and 4pm each day.
The gift certificate scheme permits you to purchase a place up front for the same basic course fee of £90. You may then choose a suitable course to attend subject to availability on that specific basic course. The gift certificate fee is paid in to our bank account.
